Algorithm for an instant composition performance

In the context of my studies in Master in Theatre practices, my artistic research revolves around the field of instant composition, the training of the practitioner in the ethics and values which penetrate the practices of it and the process of creating these kind of performances. Concerning the dancing body, I approach it as an onion which need to peel off habits, thoughts, patterns, mind- noise in order to be in readiness and with sharp reflection to affect and be affected by the surrounding environment. Relation is the core of my practices as instant composer; relation to the sound, ground, accidents, other dancers, light, etc. Talking from the perspective of a practitioner of instant composition, I perceive the necessity for the creation of a structure for instant composition performances in order to build up a ground from where the movement starts. In that way, it feels that the dancer doesn’t get lost on the vast potentilaities that a condition incorporates. Playing with the structure, messing up the structure, go beyond the structue and go back to it are the qualities, the way that the practitioner cope with the structure of an instant composition performance. The metholdogy that I use is the composition of scores.

‘I need to create a structure in order to mess it up’

So, my artistic practices until now are divided in three parts:

  1. The body as an onion. In this part, I have been working on the studio and outdoors on different ethics and values that penetrate the practices of instant composition. I have composed scores in order to train my body and my mind on the mental state of instant composition practices in order to peel habits, patterns, which prevent myself to engage with them.

  2. The body as a leaf. In this part, I have gathered the different ethics and values that I need to engage with in order to execute instant composition performances, after completing the first step.

  3. Messing-up. A constant negotiation between structure and intuition. Since, I have defined, peeled, trained myself in the qualities of instant composition, it is time to play with the form, the structure, and finally mess them up.

A realisation:

Until now, I have worked systemically on the composition of scores related to the first and the second step. However, there was one value of instant composition that I couldn’t follow the same process that I applied to the other values. This value is the mental state of spontaneity, care-free and intuition. The structure that I created failed to be applicable to the quality of spontaneity. Being currently in the process of thinking how to compose my final performance, I wondered how I can apply this quality in the preparation of the performance and the presentation of it. The methodology of composition of scores is still my main tool. I tried to create an algorithm that the quality of spontaneity is also applied in the construction of the scores. So, below it is the construction of the algorithm which I will use it as a compasee to create my final performance.
